From Printed Posters to Generative AI: The Evolution of Advertising
Advertising did not begin with a logo. It began with the most fundamental human commercial act: telling someone else about something worth having. The history of advertising is the history of communication technology applied to persuasion.
Ancient Origins
The earliest recorded advertising artefacts are not printed materials — they predate printing by millennia. Archaeological discoveries in ancient Egypt include papyrus announcements seeking runaway slaves and announcing goods for sale. In Pompeii, excavations have revealed hundreds of painted wall announcements advertising gladiatorial contests, political candidates, and tradespeople's services — many with sophisticated visual design and clear commercial intent.
Printing, Newspapers, and Mass Advertising
The printing press enabled the first printed advertisements in English newspapers in the late seventeenth century. By the nineteenth century, poster advertising had become a major medium, with artists including Toulouse-Lautrec applying serious artistic skill to commercial design. The lesson: visual advertising was sophisticated before photography existed.
Radio: The Voice in the Room
Radio introduced creative devices that persist in advertising today: the jingle, the testimonial, and the narrative advertisement. The limitation of radio — no visual dimension — proved a creative forcing function. Constraint is often the origin of creativity.
Television's Golden Age
The 30-second television commercial became the defining creative unit of advertising for half a century. The 1960s saw a creative revolution: David Ogilvy's principles — respect your audience, find the single true thing about your brand — shaped creative advertising practice for generations. Read Ogilvy. The thinking is still correct.
Digital Advertising's First Era
The first banner advertisement appeared in 1994 with a 44% click-through rate. Today, average rates are fractions of a percent. This decline tells the entire story of interruptive digital advertising. The more lasting contribution of this era was digital measurement — though optimising for what is measurable rather than what is effective remains a persistent problem.
Social Media and Mobile
Social media required advertising that felt native to the platform. The vertical format, the casual aesthetic, the use of direct address — all emerged from this platform dynamic. Platform determines format. Advertising that works on television often fails on social media, and vice versa.
Data-Driven Advertising
Programmatic advertising became the dominant model of digital delivery. But advertising quality and creative distinctiveness are significant multipliers of effectiveness. Targeting efficiency without creative quality produces diminishing returns. Both are necessary.
Generative AI: The Current Frontier
Generative AI has democratised production in the same way that desktop publishing democratised print design in the 1980s — making the technical act of creating advertising content accessible to far more people. It has not democratised advertising judgment, strategic thinking, creative vision, or cultural understanding. Those capacities remain scarce and valuable.
The psychological principles of advertising effectiveness have survived every previous technological disruption. They will survive this one.
